In the late 1800s a series of broken treaties and theft of land forced the Nez Perce people to flee their traditional homelands to reservations. They took their horses, the Appaloosa, with them. Although most of the horses were killed by the U.S. government, a few managed to survive. In video from NATURE’s American Horses, students will learn about this history and engage in discussions about how this horse came to be and the important role of this breed of horse in the history, and future, of the Nez Perce people.
